Fresh Science events 2010
Rising to the challenge
This year at Fresh Science we heard about tasty weeds, bright black holes, Antarctic ice, reversing shoulder joints, predicting bushfires, quantum dots, monitoring health using silk, and more…
The 2010 Fresh Scientists participated in school forums in Shepparton, Geelong and at the Melbourne Museum. We also took them to the pub and challenged them to describe their work in rhyme, reason or verse. Here are a few samples of their efforts.
Bridget Murphy – School of Biological Sciences, University of Sydney
A keen biologist was surprised to find
When looking up a lizard’s behind
That skinks may be an answer
For our problem of cancer
A remnant of the evolution of mankind
David Floyd – Anglo-Australian Observatory /The University of Melbourne
There was a young quaser from Ballarat
Who ate tons of stardust to get fat
He shone and he shined
But we were blind
‘Til we asked our old chum Albert Einstein
Jennifer Firn – CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems
(To weed or to feed, that is the question)
Noxious weeds cost heaps
Feed them up and graze them off
Bring back our native
Natalia Galin – Institute for Marine and Antarctic Science, University of Tasmania
There was a young girl, quite fair
Who examined the ice from the air
Deep crusty or shallow
Pristine but not yellow
The arctic is changing, beware
